Stunning New Birdseye Maple Spice Mills

Artisan Pepper Mills handmade from Birdseye Maple from Spicemills.ca (grinds pepper, salt or spice)Wow… I just love these stunning handmade birdseye maple spice mills!

I been on the lookout for some great quality birdseye maple for a long times and believe me, it can be hard to find.  This is especially true when you are really fussy!  In addition to to right visual appeal (tight grain and intense figure), the wood needs to be exceptionally stable (properly dried, straight, and check free) and the right size (at least 3″ square and 10″ or more in length) before it can become a handcradted Spicemills.ca spice mill.

I recently purchased a small supply of outstanding birdseye maple and am delighted with the results.  Check out the first of these special birdseye maple spice mills here in our eStore.

Our supply of this enigmatic wood is very limited and while we expect to make a few more later this year, we do not anticipate finding more wood of this quality in the foreseeable future.

By the way… as with all of our spice mills, these spectacular birdseye maple mills feature an authentic CrushGrind® ceramic mechanism which makes them ideal for grinding peppercorns, salt and spices. Read the rest of this entry »

Artisan Spotlight • Rallis Olive Oil •

As micro producers of fine quality hand crafted goods, we are proud to be part of the independent artisan community. To help celebrate the wonderful independent spirit behind the artisans, we will periodically feature one of our fellow Owen Sound Artists’ Co-op or Foodie Pages artisan producers here at Spicemills.ca. We hope you will visit them at the Artists’ Co-op and Foodie Pages, in person, at shows/events, or whereever you can help to support and encourage them and the independent artisan community in general.

Rallis Olive OilIn this artisan spotlight we feature Foodie Pages artisan producers Rallis Olive Oil and the Rallis Family.

The Rallis Family has been making ice pressed olive oil for nearly 5 years.

What is the difference? In terms of taste… lots. In terms of healing… everything!

Ice pressed IS NOT cold pressed! Pressing a dramatic 20-30X colder and at a fraction of the time than ‘cold pressed’ olive oil, creates a highly nutritive, super-refreshing, enzyme rich oil! Cloudy, green and raw tasting, the olives’ intense healing properties are maintained in their original state.

There’s a lot more to their journey in sustainable farming and lifestyle medicine, join the raw evoo-lution and learn more at www.icepressed.com, follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RallisRAWIcePressedOliveOil, or visit them on Foodie Pages at www.foodiepages.ca/producer/Rallis_Olive_Oil.

We’ve been busy in the workshop/studio preparing for the busy summer season

2013 is off to a great start and we are busier than ever!
Here’s a quick look at what’s going on…

Spicemills work in progressIn addition to relaunching our eStore this spring, we have recently delivered a large selection of our handmade spice mills to both the Owen Sound Artists’ Co-op in Owen Sound, and the Niagara Escarpment Outfitters in Collingwood.  We are also preparing to bring some of our spice mills as well as a few other unique one-of-a-kind hand turned items to the Linda Bester Studios Gallery in Sauble Beach this summer.

Earlier this month we participated in our first show of the season, the Hanover Home and Garden Show, and are now back in the workshop/studio preparing for Artfest at the Distillery District (Toronto), the Full Table Fare (Holland Centre), and the Markahm Village Music Festival.  And that’s just in the next two months.  In total we’ll be at more than a dozen shows this year, including our first visit as vendors at the famous Summerfolk Music Festival.  You can find our full 2013 show schedule at www.spicemills.ca/events.
